Promoting Malaysia via Cardiff City
KUALA LUMPUR: It will be a first for Malaysia in the English Football League with Cardiff City's new shirt for the coming season having the country's name emblazoned in the front.
The club's latest home and away kits (blue and yellow respectively) will carry the all-new advertising slogan.
Cardiff City chairman Datuk Chan Tien Ghee said the initiative was spearheaded by Berjaya Corp Bhd founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan to promote Malaysia and to signal growing support from the club's major Malaysian shareholders.
New look: The new Cardiff City jersey prominently displaying the word Malaysia. "From the start, it has always been about one fantastic football club and two great nations. Malaysia and Wales are similar in many ways," he told The Star yesterday.
It has been another heartbreak season for the Championship side as it has missed promotion to the Barclays Premier League for a second consecutive year.
Chan hoped that a new jersey would "freshen up" the players and lift team spirit.
The Malaysia slogan is paired with smaller versions on the back of the shirt and on the shorts.
In a statement, the club said its ties with Malaysia, investors and board members have been a major driving force for its progress.
According to its CEO Gethin Jenkins, the club had some very attractive shirt sponsorship options to link up with a number of commercial partners and brands in Britain and abroad.
"However, after speaking with our investors and knowing the commitment of Tan and Chan, we knew that the best way to highlight our affinity with Malaysia was to wear the message with pride on our kits this season.
"The bond continues to strengthen between Cardiff City and Malaysia, be that with our links to the 1Malaysia campaign aiming for unity within diverse cultures in the country, along with ever improving football connections via the start of the 1Malaysia Cardiff City Grassroots Academy in Kuala Lumpur," he added.
In May 2010, Chan led a Malaysian consortium in acquiring 36.37% of the club's shares worth 6mil (RM28.8mil).
Of the Malaysian stake, Chan, who is also managing director of Central Malaysian Properties Sdn Bhd, owns 10% while Tan holds the rest.
